Our Beliefs

What we believe at Memphis Christian Church about Jesus, the Bible, and the Church.

  • God

We believe in one eternal God who is the Creator of all things. He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He has always existed, and without Him nothing exists. He is totally loving and completely just.

    (Genesis 1-2; John 1; 1 John 5:7; Genesis 1:26; Matthew 3:16-17, 28:19; Luke 1:35; Isaiah 9:6; Hebrews 3:7-11)

  • Jesus Christ

We believe Jesus Christ is at the center of everything. Present with God at creation, through Him all things were created and find their meaning. We believe that Jesus is the only one who can reconcile us to God. Jesus Christ is the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God, born of a virgin. He lived a sinless and exemplary life, died on the cross in our place, and rose again to prove His authority over death and the grave, empowering us for life. We believe that Jesus Christ is coming back again as He promised.

    (John 1:1,14, 20:28; 1 Timothy 3:16; Isaiah 9:6; Philippians 2:5-6; 1 Timothy 2:5)

  • Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is received at our baptism and indwells every believer, sealing us for the day of salvation (Christ’s return for us), guiding us into truth, comforting us, praying on our behalf, and convicting us of sin.

    (Acts 2:38; Romans 8:9-11; Ephesians 1:13; John 16:13; Romans 8:26; John 14:26)

  • The Bible

We believe that the Bible is God’s Word. It is uniquely God-inspired, the source of truth, without error, and applicable to our everyday lives.

    (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Proverbs 30:5; Romans 16:25-26)

  • Mankind

We believe that man and woman were created in the image of God. God defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman. That our biological gender is determined at conception. We reflect the Creator and have our being in Him. God created all things good, including humans, but we chose rebellion, which broke peace between God, ourselves, others, and all of creation. We live as people in need of God’s grace, which is found only in Jesus. We look to relationships, success, jobs, cars, and anything else for our identity. But in Christ, we find our identity and what we are living for.

    (Genesis 1-3; Ephesians 1:11; Romans 1-3)

  • The Separation

We believe that sin has separated each of us from God and His purpose for our lives. We are in need of God’s forgiveness, mercy, grace, and reconcilliation.

    (Genesis 3; Isaiah 59:2; Romans 3:23; 6:23; Jeremiah 17:9; Ephesians 2:1-3)

  • The Reconciliation

We believe that in order to receive forgiveness and a fresh start with God, we must repent of our sins, believe in Jesus, be baptized and commit to His will for our lives. Forgiveness is through faith in Jesus Christ, not our own works.

    (Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:38; Mark 16:16; Acts 8:12, 36-38; 10:47-48).

  • The Lord’s Super

We believe Communion, instituted by The Lord Jesus Christ, is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ. The elements of bread and grape juice (representing the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ) are taken in remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross.

    (Matthew 26:26-29; I Corinthians 10:16, 11:23-25).

  • Trusting God with the First and the Best

We believe God’s command that we bring to Him the first and the best of all that He has entrusted to us. This is the Tithe. We give above and beyond the Tithe to support good deeds and charities.

    (James 1:17; Deuteronomy 8:18; Proverbs 3:9; Exodus 23:19; Malachi 3:8-10; Numbers 19:21-28; 2 Corinthians 8:1-5; Luke 6:38; Acts 2:44; Galatians 6:6; Matthew 6:19-21)

  • The Church

We believe in the power and significance of the Church, which consists of all believers indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and the necessity of believers to meet regularly together.

    (Ephesians 1:22, 2:19-22; Hebrews 12:23; John 17:11, 20-23)

  • The Return of Christ

We believe Jesus Christ will physically and visibly return. This will occur at a date undisclosed by the Scriptures. He will judge the living and the dead, creating a new earth, and God will make his home with man.

    (Matthew 24:30, 26:63-64; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8; Revelation 1:7; 21)
